Winter weather and winter conditions near Traverse City are impacted immensely by the proximity to snowbelt areas. That means that in addition to regular snowfall, the area is also subject to the phenomenon known as 'lake effect' snow. The colder Canadian air blowing down across the relatively warmer waters of Lake Michigan cause lake effect snow. The warmer lake water evaporates and mixes with the colder air, resulting in a fair amount of snowfall. Lake effect snow is difficult to forecast and snowfall can vary significantly at locations just a few mile apart. You will hear information on the actual conditions of the area's downhill slopes, cross-country trails and snowmobile trails.
