The Traverse City North Stars are a Tier II Junior A ice hockey team in the North American Hockey
League's North Division, and play in a 1,500-seat arena in southeast Traverse City, Centre ICE
Arena. Traverse City recently became known as "Hockeytown North" as a result of the
relationship with the NHL Detroit Red Wings, who use the arena as their pre-season practice
facility.
The North American Hockey League was founded in 1975, under different names. The 2009-10
campaign marks the 34th season of NAHL competition, making it the oldest Junior A hockey
league in the U.S. Many players go on to play college hockey. The NAHL has produced its share
of National Hockey League players, including Brian Rafalski, Ryan Miller, Doug Weight, David
Legwand, Rick DiPietro, Brian Rolston, and Brett Lebda.
NAHL teams play almost exclusively against teams in their own divisions to minimize travel and
allow students to pursue their educations. Teams play a 56-game regular season schedule that
runs from September to April, with exhibition games and league playoff games providing
additional contests.
Showcase events and the annual Robertson Cup championship tournament provide teams a
chance for enhanced competition and while attracting numerous scouts and coaches from across
North America.
