National Cherry Festival - the purposes is to celebrate cherries, tourism and community involvement. This Traverse City event begins the first Saturday of July and lasts 8 days. Over 1/2 million visitors come to Traverse City for this annual event.
The Traverse City Film Festival event began in 2005 and is getting bigger each year. The week-long event is held in late July and runs through early August. This is fast becoming a nationally recognized event. Films of all kinds are shown during the event at the State Theater in downtown Traverse City, the historic City Opera House, the Old Town Playhouse, Lars Hockstad Auditorium and the Open Space Park -- located right on the beautiful Grand Traverse Bay. Classic movies are shown free of charge each night on a huge inflatable screen.
The Traverse City Film Festival has grown to become one of the largest film festival events in the Midwest and one of the most respected in the country. Last year, there were over 80,000 admissions to nearly 100 screenings -- some of them U.S. or world premieres. A special emphasis is given to foreign films, American independents and documentaries.
Horse Shows by the Bay features more than 1,400 world-class riders and horses from around the country that compete for 3 weeks in the Olympic Disciplines of Show Jumping and Dressage events. The event is located at Flintfields Horse Park - 3 miles east of Acme, 1/2 mile north of M-72 on Bates Road near the Turtle Creek Casino.
The Horse Shows by the Bay event carries the highest rating possible allowed by the United States Equestrian Federation (AA sanctioned) and is also acknowledged by the World Championship Hunter Rider Awards Program, the International High Performance Hunter Derby Program, the United States Hunter-Jumper Association, United States Dressage Federation and Young Jumper Championship Program as a member event. It hosts 1,400 horses and riders and owners coming here to win points toward national titles and year-end awards. $395,000 in prize money is awarded throughout the festival and to date it has brought more than $30 million in tourism revenue to the immediate area.
